Wrapping Our Neighbors in Warmth: Holidays at SOS
The winter holidays are hailed as a time of joy and connection. Yet, for our older neighbors who are homebound, this season can feel anything but joyful. Many are unable to spend these special days with loved ones, and face not only isolation but also other profound challenges like health issues or food insecurity.
At SOS, we recognize that the holidays can be a complicated and bittersweet time for many seniors. That’s why each year, we add special touches to our programs to help brighten the season. It begins with the nourishing, festive meals we lovingly prepare and deliver for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
Our generous community ensures that we do not do this work alone. Since 2006, holiday meal programs among the seniors we serve have been partially funded by the Fremont Bank Foundation, whose steadfast dedication to Alameda County seniors and to the community at large is a true blessing. “Supporting SOS Meals on Wheels’ holiday program is one of the ways we live out our commitment to community. Knowing that our contribution helps bring a smile and a warm meal to seniors during the holidays is a truly meaningful gift.” said Brian Hughes, President and Executive Director of Fremont Bank Foundation. And it’s not just our friends at Fremont Bank Foundation who allow us to prepare these special meals. Individual donors and other local businesses also give warmly during holiday time in support of their older neighbors.
But our efforts extend beyond a warm meal. Thanks to the compassion of our community, we are able to deliver other tokens of comfort and cheer. Last year, we distributed 20 handmade quilts from the Piecemakers Guild, 254 handmade cloth placemats from a local sewing circle, 231 holiday cards from students from Washington High School and The Stratford School, and goodie bags from the Washington High School Special Education Program and Meals on Wheels of Alameda County (just to name a few). Gifts like these send a powerful message to our clients: you are seen, you are cared for, and you are not forgotten.
The heart of these holiday efforts beats through our tireless volunteers. They drive extra routes, work additional kitchen shifts, and fill crucial gaps when our staff is stretched thin. Their dedication ensures our services continue uninterrupted, even on the busiest days of the year.
Our clients depend on us, and with the unwavering support of our community, we do more than just meet their needs—we wrap them in a blanket of compassion that reminds them they are a cherished part of our community family. Together, we are replacing loneliness with connection and worry with warmth. This holiday, and every holiday, we are grateful for your support of what we do.
