At SOS Meals on Wheels, volunteers are our lifeblood. Volunteering is a great way to make a huge impact in a short amount of time. We offer a variety of opportunities. Whether you are looking to volunteer as a team with friends or colleagues, you are rolling solo, or even if you have a kid in tow, we’ve got something for you! Ready to help seniors stay healthy and independent in their own homes? Sign up HERE!
meal delivery driver
Do you have an hour or two to spare one morning per week? If so, let us find a delivery route perfect for you! Drivers use their own vehicles and fuel to deliver 10-15 meals to local seniors. Meals are picked up at one of three locations.
Want to deliver meals without the cost and liability associated with using your own vehicle? Try volunteering as a meal runner, riding alongside one of our staff drivers and delivering up to 35 meals to the door while the driver waits or circles if parking is limited.
Sign up your group to Adopt-a-Route! Take turns delivering meals once a week to 10-15 to local seniors. The number of people on your team determines how often it's your turn to deliver. If you can't make your shift, call on one of your teammates to cover for you.
Our kitchen produces 1600+ meals daily. Come be a part of the action and help us prep and package meals in our commercial kitchen in San Leandro. Current hours of operations are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 7am to 11am.
Tasks include scooping food on the tray line, placing labels on sealed meals, stacking and racking finished meals to be wheeled into the refrigerator, helping assemble side components like salads, fruit, etc.
This is a great opportunity for families, friends, clubs and corporate groups!
mercy brown bag assembly
Help to assemble 70+ bags of non-perishable grocery items to be delivered to our most vulnerable seniors. Grocery bags need to be doubled, labelled and filled. This opportunity occurs twice a month. Call for schedule.
Got admin skills? Great! Help prepare client statements. Volunteers meet at 10am in Suite 280 on the last business day of each month. This task usually takes 2-2.5 hours to complete, depending on the number of volunteers working. We occasionally need help with light filing or other admin work too.
special projects & events
Looking for a one-off volunteer opportunity? We host several events around the calendar year and often need help in the lead up to an event and at the event itself. A/V masters, decorators, photographers and cleanup crews are always needed!
We love our young volunteers too. 13 and ups, accompanied by a parent or guardian, are welcome to work on the tray line. It's a fun and easy way to fulfill service hours and learn about caring for your neighbors. It can also be a great activity for a family to do together.
No need for the littler ones to feel left out! They can create cards, decorate placemats or lunch bags to be delivered to our clients, along with their meal. Our seniors light up when they receive these special gifts. And the kids learn the value of serving others. Win-win!
