Reflections on the Current Government Shutdown
Thank you to the many members of our community who have reached out to ask how we are faring in the midst of the federal government shutdown. Thankfully, our services have not been immediately impacted, and our amazing team of staff and volunteers continues to show up every day for older adults in Alameda County.
Though we are managing well at this moment, we don't want to understate our general concerns about federal funding uncertainty and what cuts could mean for our older neighbors. Over 58% of our funding trickles down from the federally mandated Older Americans Act, with grant contracts administered by Alameda County. It is possible that, at some point, the shutdown could affect our ability to be reimbursed for program costs. And—as longer-term funding decisions are being made at the federal level—it is possible that we will not be funded again at the same level for the upcoming grant period, to begin mid-year in 2026.
As unnerving as this moment may be for us, we are most concerned about the seniors we serve. Whenever our drivers receive questions from those on our service, we assure them that they can rely on us to continue providing the care and support they depend on. This shutdown will not stop us from showing up with delicious meals, warm smiles, and listening ears. We will rally to make sure that our clients are cared for and continue receiving support.
For those who are wondering how to help, please consider:
Making a gift to SOS. Strong funding from the community makes us less reliant upon government funding.
Volunteering. Helping hands from the community help us keep our costs down.
Contact your member of Congress to ask them to stand by our homebound seniors.
We have always relied on our community to support our neighbors. We'll continue to do it well with your help!
