Meet Our Newly Expanded Leadership Team
This August, SOS reached a significant organizational milestone. With the hiring of our final leadership team member, our vision for a robust, dynamic team is now complete. This strategic expansion means more than just filling open positions; it’s a powerful representation of our commitment to delivering even better service to Alameda County’s older adults.
This journey began with a vision to expand beyond our 2023-era executive team, which involved only four roles. Under the guidance of Executive Director Charlie Deterline, and with the support of our Board, we saw expanded leadership as an opportunity to deepen our work.
Our first incremental hire in summer 2024 was a Director of Advocacy, a role dedicated to strengthening our community roots and engaging more citizens as volunteers and activated champions for our older neighbors. Our new director, Kim Olson, hailed from the Oregon Food Bank, where she led the Government Relations team and built a program to raise significant state and federal funds.
In summer 2025, we set our sights on another transformative new role, hiring MaryBeth Ventura as our Director of Programs. As a resource dedicated to our client service practice, MaryBeth’s leadership is allowing us to focus more sharply on the everyday experience of the older adults we serve, ensuring we are consistently driving toward their best possible outcomes. With more than 13 years of experience as a nonprofit executive, she is a compassionate people manager, professional developer, and coach.
We are also thrilled about the evolution of previously existing roles and the talented individuals who are bringing them to life. Our new Director of Operations, Malachi Harland, trained at the Culinary Institute of America and served as the Director of Google’s Catering Culinary Program. Malachi joined SOS in summer 2025 and brings unparalleled expertise to our kitchens and delivery fleet.
Our Director of Development, Kim Palacios, has invigorated our fundraising and communications practices, deepening our storytelling across key audiences and reengineering our development practice to prioritize sustainability. She holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE).
Our Director of Finance, Kirk Hogan, is a Certified Public Accountant who is entering his sixth year with the organization. During his tenure, he has built and expanded his organization into a high-functioning finance team.
“I continue to be delighted and honored by the caliber of people who want to work with us here at SOS,” said Executive Director Charlie Deterline. “As we head into a milestone year in 2026, we have a team in place that will enable us to continue to be a leader in fighting food insecurity and loneliness, while ensuring that we also take leaps forward in how we care and provide for our teams.”
