Above and Beyond: The Volunteer Who Helped Our Client Cast His Vote

At SOS Meals on Wheels, we couldn’t be more grateful for our incredible volunteers, who consistently go above and beyond to serve our clients and our mission. Their dedication and compassion make a profound difference in the lives of the seniors we serve and their efforts truly embody the spirit of community care.

Take Gina Gozinsky, for example. When she learned that our client, William, needed a ride to the polls to cast his vote this past November, she didn’t hesitate to step forward and help. She took the time to drive him to his polling place at a local school and accompany him as he voted. Gina and her husband, Peter, are longtime volunteer drivers, delivering on a regular Tuesday route in Oakland.

Stories like this are a testament to the meaningful relationships that can blossom between our clients and their drivers. Connections like these are among the most special and rewarding aspects of our work. They showcase the humanity of what we do and speak to a culture we’re proud of—one that aims to enrich the lives of volunteers and clients alike.

Our drivers don’t simply drop meals off on doorsteps. They hand-deliver each meal personally, taking the time to interact authentically with our clients.

For many seniors, these visits are more than just a warm smile and a wellness check—they are anticipated moments of connection that brighten their mornings. In our 2024 client survey, 53% of respondents said their driver was the only person they had contact with most days. This underscores the vital role our volunteers play in combating social isolation, a core part of our mission.

Volunteering with SOS Meals on Wheels takes many forms. Some volunteers adopt a route and deliver meals, while others assist in the kitchen, packing meals into trays. Others lend their skills in the office, helping to ensure that our administrative functions run smoothly.
