The Alameda County Board of Supervisors Recognizes SOSMOW and Spectrum in Honor of March for Meals
On March 11, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors presented a proclamation to SOS Meals on Wheels Executive Director Charlie Deterline and Spectrum Community Services Executive Director Laura Calvert, declaring March 2025 as Senior Nutrition Program Month.
Recognition of the 23rd Annual March for Meals Month was also declared. March for Meals is an annual campaign that raises awareness about senior hunger and isolation and highlights the vital role that programs like Meals on Wheels play in addressing these issues.
March for Meals was originally founded to celebrate the historic day in 1972 when a national nutrition program for seniors was added to the Older Americans Act. This legislation supported the rapid growth of the Meals on Wheels network that now collectively serves 2.8 million seniors each year.
We offer a heartfelt thank you to the Board of Supervisors for recognizing the dedication of Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers in supporting our most vulnerable older neighbors. And we thank all of those who helped us celebrate this historic month, particularly those who came out for a series of co-sponsored (with Spectrum) Champion’s Week events.
Special thanks to Oakland Council Member Zac Unger, San Leandro Mayor Juan González, Hayward Council Member Julie Roche, Newark Mayor Mike Hannon and all of the city staff and community leaders who helped deliver meals to SOSMOW clients. Together, we are protecting homebound seniors in our community!
