CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF SERVICE

For six incredible decades, SOS Meals on Wheels has been a lifeline for older neighbors across Alameda County, delivering not just meals but hope, connection, and dignity. Initially called Service Opportunity for Seniors, SOS was founded by a compassionate community activist named Emma Vargas in 1966 as an extension of an outreach program to seniors in an old church kitchen in Hayward. The program expanded steadily over the years and eventually adopted the Meals on Wheels moniker and model.

Since 1966, we’ve grown from serving Hayward, San Leandro, Castro Valley, and San Lorenzo to expanding into Oakland in 2014 and Fremont, Newark, and Union City in 2023.

With the support of community partners, we can continue ensuring that seniors age with independence, dignity, and a sense of community. We can’t wait to honor this milestone and inspire even greater impact in the years to come.

IN-KIND DONATION OPPORTUNITIES

We are currently seeking items that can be bid on at our October 17th event as part of live and silent auctions. Comprehensive gift baskets are welcome, as are standalone items that may be bundled as part of a larger package. As a thank you for your gift, we will recognize you through our newsletter and social channels, as well as on signage at the event. We will also provide you with a gift receipt for your donation. The fair market value of your gift may be tax deductible.
