Seniors Rally at Oakland City Hall

In November, Oakland faced a $129 million+ budget deficit, which put cuts for us, our partner organizations and all five of Oakland’s senior centers on the table. Led by the Senior Services Coalition of Alameda County, we joined with our partners to advocate for program funding. Together, we amplified the voices of older Oakland residents by emailing city officials, testifying at city meetings and speaking to the press.

Our advocacy reached its peak when more than 60 seniors rallied in front of City Hall before the final budget vote. Because our clients were unable to attend in-person, we shared their statements and stories. Our united message was heard and respected by the Oakland City Council, which adjusted the budget meeting schedule to allow the seniors who rallied that day to testify first. The council committed to working with seniors to keep the centers open and to identify funds for services.

The fight is not over and it extends far beyond one city’s budget. SOS Meals on Wheels will continue to bring our community of supporters together to advocate for essential senior services.
